The Osogbo Branch of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has congratulated one of its members, Hon. M. B. O. Ibraheem whose nomination by the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a member of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission has just been confirmed by the Senate of the Federal Republic.
In a statement signed by the Branch Chairman, Mr. Abdulrahman Okunade and the Branch Secretary, Mr. S. O. Abiona, the body of lawyers expressed its confidence in the ability of the appointee to discharge the duties of his new office.
According to the Association, “Hon. M. B. O. Ibraheem as a consummate legal practitioner of over twenty-eight years post-call experience, a committed bar man and a former law maker in Osun State who has attended a number of law conferences both in and outside Nigeria, will no doubt bring his wealth of experience to bear on the very important national assignment. Hon. M. B. O., as he is fondly called, is exceptionally passionate about the rule of law and its due observance, which attribute saw him emerging as the Branch’s Legal Adviser in 2017, and serving the Bar in that capacity till 2019.”
In further vouching for the suitability of the new appointee, the law society declared that “it is interesting and particularly assuring that Mr. President has vindicated our Branch’s sense of assessment by appointing this reformer as a member of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission. This is because, almost one year ago, he was appointed as a member of the NBA Osogbo Branch’s Law Reform Committee, the position he occupied till the time of his new appointment by the President. It is therefore our conviction that he will be a round peg in the new round hole”, the Association assured.
While reiterating its confidence in the suitability of the new federal commissioner, the lawyers’ association also seized the opportunity to give its opinions about the functions of the Nigerian Law Reform Commission as an agency of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“We cannot but agree with the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, to the effect that the Commission has remained dormant for a long time. While lauding the Senate’s ongoing effort at amending the extant Nigerian Law Reform Commission Act, we implore the legislative body to factor the concerns expressed by the newly appointed Chairman of the Commission, Prof. Jummai Audi, into consideration, regarding the near-absolute powers granted the Attorney-General of the Federation over the Commission”, the statement concluded.
