The Kano State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency has made a significant interception of Cannabis Sativa, dismantling a major drug syndicate in the process.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Acting Public Relations Officer of the Command, Sadiq Maigatari, revealed that the operation took place at Garindau, near the Wudil bridge in the Wudil Local Government area of Kano State.

The authorities managed to seize an impressive 116 bags of cannabis, weighing a staggering 1,553.1 kg. Among the confiscated items were 50 bags of compressed cannabis, each containing 25 blocks, making a total of 1,250 blocks, along with 66 bags of loose quantities of the drug.

Maigatari further stated that this successful operation was the result of a well-coordinated surveillance effort, relying on crucial intelligence reports and the effective coordination of resources and personnel.

The officers had been diligently working on the case for two months and successfully tracked and intercepted the drugs, which were being transported from Lokoja to Jigawa.

“During the operation, two suspects were apprehended: Jonathan Nuhu, a 45-year-old from Kanke village in Plateau State, and Muhammad Abubakar, an 18-year-old from Kumbotso local government area of Kano State.

“Both individuals are believed to be part of a larger drug syndicate that specialises in transporting cannabis to northern Nigeria and distributing them to various dealers.”

According to Maigatari, this arrest marks a significant milestone for the agency’s continuous endeavors to combat drug trafficking and ensure public safety. He emphasized that it delivers a severe blow to the illegal drug trade, disrupting the supply chain that distributes drugs in Kano and neighboring states.

However, Maigatari also mentioned that despite the operation’s success, two other suspects managed to escape capture during the arrest and are currently at large.

“The NDLEA is continuing its efforts to bring these criminals to justice.

“This case serves as a testament to the diligence and bravery of the NDLEA officers, who are on the front lines in the fight against drug trafficking.

“The state Command under Abubakar Idris Ahmad, will remain vigilant and dedicated to its mission of upholding the law and protecting the good people of Kano State,” the statement said.
