New COAS vows to run Army driven by discipline, professionalism

During the handover ceremony at the Defence Headquarters in Abuja, Major General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja, the newly appointed Chief of Army Staff, expressed his commitment to leading an army characterized by discipline and professionalism.

In his address to a large gathering of senior military officers and heads of various army departments, Lagbaja emphasized the importance of maintaining these qualities.

He acknowledged the previous administration’s achievements in resource management and military hardware procurement, which he described as unprecedented.

Lagbaja pledged to build upon the legacy of his predecessor, urging those who are leaving the service not to withhold their valuable experiences from the Nigerian Army when the need arises.

“I promise to run an army that will be driven by discipline and professionalism,” he said.

During the event, Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya, the immediate past Chief of Army Staff, acknowledged that the Boko Haram insurgency was at its height when he assumed the role in 2021.

However, he asserted that he is leaving the situation in a better state than when he first took office.

Yahaya’s appointment as army chief came on May 27, 2021, following the tragic death of Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru and 10 other army officers and personnel in an air crash on May 21.
