The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has reported 265 different cases of human rights violations in Yobe State from January to November 2024.

Labaran Babbangida, the State Coordinator of the NHRC in Yobe, shared this information during the observance of the 2024 International Human Rights Day in Damaturu, the state capital.

“This year there is an increase in human rights violations in Yobe state.  This happens as result of the awareness raised among the general public and the willingness of the people to seek redress in terms of violation of their rights,” he said.

“Currently in our records; we have about 265 records of violations that occurred which supersedes the one of last year 2023.  Globally, the economic meltdown has been one of the factors and coupled with the conflict in the BAY states of Borno, Adamawa and Yobe, these have contributed to the violations.”

While delivering the speech of the United Nations Secretary-General, Kalu Okey, a Programme Officer for Community Mobilization at the United Nations Development Programme, stated that conflicts worldwide are contributing to human rights violations, leading to the disregard of national laws and the shrinking of civic space.

He urged the government to uphold the rights of the public to ensure their protection.
