Niger tanker explosion claims over 48 lives

In the early hours of Sunday, a tragic tanker explosion occurred on the Lapai-Agaie road, about 2 kilometers from Dendo Community in Agaie Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State.

The accident, which took place around 12:30 am, involved a petrol tanker carrying fuel that collided with a truck transporting passengers and cattle. The truck, which was traveling from Wudil in Kano State to Lagos, was severely impacted by the collision, leading to a massive explosion.

Two other vehicles, a crane truck and a pickup van, were also caught in the resulting fire, worsening the devastation.

Preliminary reports reveal that more than 48 people lost their lives in the blaze, with over 50 cattle also perishing in the inferno. The 48 bodies were given a mass burial on Sunday.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in partnership with Local Government Emergency Committees (LGEMCs), quickly deployed a Rapid Response Team (RRT) to the scene. Rescue operations are still ongoing as emergency teams continue to search for more victims, with several bodies believed to be trapped in the wreckage.
