The Niger State Government has announced the allocation of ₦3 million to each of the 274 political wards across the state’s 25 local government areas for the implementation of grassroots development projects.
This initiative, designed to accelerate development at the grassroots level, was launched during a state-wide sensitisation tour led by the Commissioner for Rural and Community Development, Phallalu Bako, who also chairs the State Ward Development Project Steering Committee.
Bako reiterated Governor Umaru Bago’s commitment to revitalising ward-level development by delivering projects that address specific community needs.
“Each ward will receive ₦3 million to carry out projects identified by the community. This initiative empowers residents to take charge of their development priorities,” Bako stated.
The steering committee visited the Emirate Councils of Suleja, Lapai, and Agaie to inform traditional leaders and stakeholders about the initiative’s objectives and implementation framework.Bako emphasised that ward and local government development committees—comprising representatives from traditional, religious, political, and civil society groups—would be set up to oversee the use of funds and ensure transparent and accountable project execution.
He added that the government is determined to uphold transparency and ensure value for every amount spent.
“This won’t be business as usual. We are committed to transparency, community involvement, and making sure every kobo is well spent,” he said.Speaking during the tour, the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Binta Mamman, described the initiative as a positive step towards reducing the hardship faced by vulnerable groups, particularly women.
“When boreholes, primary health centres, and schools are operational, it enhances productivity and drives socio-economic growth,” she said.
Traditional rulers—including the Emir of Lapai, Alhaji Umaru Bago III; Emir of Agaie, Alhaji Yusuf Nuhu; and the Emir of Suleja, Alhaji Awwal Ibrahim (represented by the Madakin Suleja, Shuibu Gani)—commended the initiative. They underscored the importance of grassroots development and urged stakeholders to ensure proper monitoring and accountability.
The steering committee comprises senior government officials, the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state, and representatives from key ministries. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Rural and Community Development, Yakubu Mohammed, serves as the committee’s secretary.
The sensitisation tour is expected to continue across other emirates and local government areas in the coming days.
