As part of efforts to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to upholding human rights, the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the expansion of gender-based violence (GBV) desk offices to all police divisions nationwide.
This initiative aims to enhance efficiency, improve service delivery, and ensure easier access to justice for citizens.
A statement by the Force spokesman, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, confirmed that the GBV desk, previously limited to zonal and state commands, will now be established at the divisional level.
According to him, this expansion will ensure that cases of gender-based violence receive prompt, specialised, and professional attention.
To support the initiative, the IGP has mandated the appointment of qualified officers as GBV desk officers. These officers will undergo specialised training to equip them with the necessary skills, knowledge, and expertise to handle GBV cases effectively.
Adejobi further stated that divisional GBV desk officers will now oversee the Juvenile, Women, and Children (JWC) section in their respective divisions.
This move is part of a broader strategy to provide a comprehensive approach to tackling gender-based violence, fostering a supportive environment for victims, and ensuring swift justice delivery.
