Nigeria gets new spot on latest FIFA rankings

Nigeria has climbed one spot in the most recent FIFA men’s rankings for June.

Previously ranked 40th globally in May, the Super Eagles have gained six points and now occupy the 39th position.

This advancement in the rankings is mainly attributed to their notable performance in the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Sierra Leone during the reviewed month.

Managed by Jose Peseiro, the Nigerian team emerged victorious with a 3-1 win over the Leone Stars in a match held in Liberia.

The win also saw them book a spot at next year’s AFCON billed to hold in Ivory Coast.

The last FIFA men’s ranking was announced in April, with the Eagles holding the 40th position at that time.

Within the African continent, the three-time African champions have maintained their position among the top six teams.

This is significant as it ensures they will be seeded in the upcoming AFCON draw scheduled for later in 2023.

On the African continent, Morocco remains the top-ranked nation, occupying the 13th position globally.

Following them are Senegal (18th), Tunisia (31st), Algeria (33rd), and (34th).

At the global level, Argentina, the reigning world champion, maintains its position as the top-ranked nation, followed by France, Brazil, England, and Belgium.
