The Nigerian Government has launched a new digital platform that enables citizens to register births and deaths, apply for birth attestation, correct civil registration records and verify certificates online.
The initiative, introduced by the National Population Commission and announced by the National Orientation Agency, is designed to simplify access to civil registration services by reducing paperwork and eliminating long queues.
According to the NPC, birth registration for children under five remains free at all registration centres nationwide. However, online self-service birth registration attracts a ₦5,000 processing fee.
To apply online, the child must have been born in Nigeria, possess a National Identification Number, and have at least one Nigerian parent. In addition, one parent must hold a valid birth certificate. Applicants should note that certificates can only be downloaded once, while additional copies require a reprint application through the NPC portal.
The commission also confirmed that death registration remains free. Applicants must provide the informant’s National Identification Number and submit details including the deceased’s identity, place and cause of death, occupation, marital status and residence before selecting the registration centre.
The platform is expected to improve access to legal identity, healthcare, education, passports, financial services and other government programmes while strengthening Nigeria’s civil registration system.
