Nigeria mourns former Qatar Emir Sheikh Hamad’s death

The Federal Government has expressed deep condolences to the government and people of Qatar following the death of the country’s former ruler, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani.

Sheikh Hamad, who served as Qatar’s Emir from 1995 to 2013, died on Sunday, July 12, 2026. He is widely recognised for driving the country’s rapid economic growth, modernisation and increasing its influence on the global stage.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs through its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria described the late Father Amir as a visionary leader whose impact extended beyond Qatar.

The ministry said his commitment to development, diplomacy and international cooperation helped transform Qatar into a major global player and earned him admiration across the world.

On behalf of the Federal Government and Nigerians, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, conveyed condolences to Qatar’s Emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, the Al Thani family and the people of Qatar.

The statement also reaffirmed Nigeria’s solidarity with Qatar during the mourning period, praying for the peaceful repose of Sheikh Hamad and for strength and comfort for his family, the country’s leadership and its citizens.
