Six Nigerian boxers have been enlisted to compete for spots at the upcoming Paris 2024 Games’ second Window qualification tournament set to be held in Bangkok, Thailand.
The Secretary-General of the Nigeria Boxing Federation (NBF), Dapo Akinyele, confirmed this information to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Lagos.
Akinyele mentioned that elite boxers from various countries will gather in Bangkok from May 23 to June 3 for the Paris Olympics qualifiers.
He emphasized that the federation’s focus is primarily on female boxers, as they stand a better chance of securing qualification to the Paris Games.
“If all goes as planned, we shall take four female and two male boxers to Bangkok but if we have to reduce the overall figure to five, we shall present three female and two male pugilists.” The seasoned admistrator stated.
“We have to project and focus on our strength and I’m sure we shall cement our place at the 2024 Olympic Games,” he said.
Nigeria will be contending for medals in the 50, 57, 66, 75, and +92kg weight categories in boxing.
During the initial phase of the Olympic Games Boxing Qualifiers held in Italy, none of the 67 African participants managed to secure an Olympic berth.
In addition to boxing, Team Nigeria will also be participating in athletics, badminton, women’s basketball, women’s football, table tennis, weightlifting, and wrestling at the Paris Games.
