Nigeria will turn around when people of character gain power – Utomi

Professor Pat Utomi believes that placing individuals of integrity in positions of authority will significantly improve Nigeria’s prospects. Speaking on Channels Television’s *Politics Today* on Wednesday, the professor of political economy emphasized that the nation has the human capital necessary to achieve greatness.

“Ultimately, values drive human progress. When individuals with character and a commitment to service occupy public authority, the country will experience a transformation,” Utomi stated during the program. “We have the essential ingredients, the human capital required to lead the way.”

Utomi expressed concern over the decline of culture and values in Nigeria, attributing this to the collapse of the country’s institutions. He argued that no nation can achieve genuine progress without robust institutions, particularly a reliable judiciary and a competent electoral body.

“The biggest challenge we face is the breakdown of culture and values in Nigeria, and values are essential to human advancement. How do we initiate a values revolution? Strong institutions are key to progress. We need to commit to building institutions that hold people accountable and uphold the rule of law,” he said.

He further criticized the judiciary, calling it a “laughing stock,” and warned that no country can move forward without a trustworthy judicial system. He also pointed out the weaknesses of other institutions like INEC, saying that without strengthening these bodies, progress would remain elusive.

“We must ensure that we build strong institutions and cultivate values that prioritize integrity, so people of character can lead by example. I am confident that this is possible because history has shown it can be done,” Utomi added.

He also expressed disappointment in young Nigerians, stating that they play a role in the country’s challenges by electing corrupt politicians. Utomi emphasized that the nation would progress when leaders prioritize competence over nepotism.
