#NigeriaAt64: Our nation urgently in need of rescue from further decay – Peter Obi

As Nigeria marks its 64th year as a nation, Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general election, has emphasized that Africa’s largest nation urgently requires rescue from “further decay.”

Obi made this statement on Tuesday via his X handle, where he outlined the country’s challenges in the economic, social, and security sectors.

“When we compare ourselves to countries that gained independence around the same time—before or after us—Nigeria stands out as a nation in decline, urgently in need of rescue from further decay,” he said.

“On this day, therefore, we must make a solemn commitment to build a nation that is truly independent from the state capture that has dragged it into failure and kept its people in suffering.”

The former governor of Anambra expressed concern about what he considers Nigeria’s underachievement in essential areas of development, questioning whether the nation has genuinely improved the lives of its citizens.

Anniversary celebrations, whether for an individual or a nation, provide a chance to reflect on past memories, celebrate achievements, look ahead, and express gratitude. This is precisely what we are doing today as our beloved nation commemorates its 64th independence.

He also highlighted pressing issues facing the country, such as widespread poverty, a failing education system, and a heavy debt burden.

The former presidential candidate called on all Nigerians to recommit to creating a nation free from tribal disunity, religious conflict, and corruption.

Obi said, “Our nation continues its dangerous dance on the edge of a precipice. We must create a nation free from tribal disunity and religious disharmony.

“We must build a New and Productive Nigeria that prioritizes the well-being of its citizens. That is the independence we should celebrate as a nation whose greatness remains Possible.”
