A senior officer of the Nigerian Army, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Farouq, has reportedly been killed in a Boko Haram attack on a military base in Kukawa.

Farouq, who served as a Commanding Officer, was said to have died during the attack carried out by suspected members of Boko Haram in the early hours of the assault.

Military sources said the insurgents launched a coordinated attack on the base and also targeted residents of the Kukawa community, causing panic among locals.

The sources confirmed that Farouq and several soldiers under his command were among those killed during the incident.
