Nigerian Army decorates first female infantry corps warrant officer

The Nigerian Army Women Command celebrated the promotion of Army Warrant Officer Hajara Egbunu on Friday, marking a historic milestone.

The announcement was made in a statement by the Nigerian Army on Sunday.

According to the statement, Brigadier General Mathias Amatso, Commander of the Nigerian Army Women Command, officially decorated Egbunu with her new rank badge during a ceremony held at the Command Conference Room in Abuja.

This historic achievement makes Egbunu the first female soldier from both the elite Infantry Corps and the Nigerian Army Women Command to reach the esteemed rank of Army Warrant Officer.

Lieutenant Maureen Ogbuka, Acting Assistant Director of Army Public Relations for the Nigerian Army Women Command, noted that Brigadier General Amatso commended Egbunu for her outstanding professionalism, dedication, and effectiveness.

He emphasized that her promotion was a testament to her hard work and encouraged her to continue leading by example, maintaining discipline, and inspiring younger soldiers, in line with the core values of the Nigerian Army.

In her acceptance speech, Army Warrant Officer Egbunu expressed heartfelt gratitude to God and to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General OO Oluyede, for his visionary leadership and support in advancing her career.

She also recognized Brigadier General Amatso’s guidance, which played a key role in her success as the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) of the Command.

The event ended on a joyful note with a group photograph and light refreshments, symbolizing a significant step toward greater gender inclusion within the Nigerian Army.
