A Nigerian cleric, Bishop Taiwo Michael Fakunle, has been killed in Johannesburg, South Africa, after being shot at his residence.
The Nigerian Citizens Association, South Africa (NICASA), disclosed the incident in a statement issued on Friday.
NICASA National President, Rev. Frank Onyekwelu, said Fakunle, who was from Ekiti State, was killed at his home in Kensington, Johannesburg.
According to Onyekwelu, two unidentified individuals gained access to the cleric’s residence and shot him several times.
He explained that NICASA has formally notified the Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg and that a murder case has been opened at the Jeppe Police Station.
The NICASA President urged the South African Police Service and Nigerian diplomatic representatives to ensure that a comprehensive probe is carried out to bring those responsible to justice.
“According to the information available to NICASA, two suspects gained access to his residence and opened fire on him, reportedly discharging more than seven bullets.
“This was not merely an ordinary loss of life; it was a horrific and senseless act of violence that has robbed a family of a loved one and the Nigerian community of another precious life,” he said.
