Nigerian student bags 11 months imprisonment for assaulting wife in UK

John Nwadiaju, a Nigerian student at Bangor University in North Wales, received an 11-month prison term with a one-year suspension for physically assaulting and torturing his wife, Kosisochukwu Echem.

The 34-year-old was given the sentence, which includes 250 hours of unpaid labour, at the Caernarfon Crown Court on Friday, according to North Whales Chronicle.

Nwadiaju and Echem were married in Nigeria in April 2022, according to the prosecutor, Paulinus Barnes, but they later divorced in August due to allegations of abuse and violence.

The wife had travelled to see him in Bangor, where he was pursuing his Master’s degree, in the hopes of a reconciliation. However, Nwadiaju was alleged to have repeatedly beaten her while seizing her passport and Personal Independence Payment card.

Blood was found on his person and property, and the police apprehended him there.

Nwadiaju claimed that his actions were self-defense, yet he was nevertheless found guilty.

Nwadiaju was given an 11-month prison term with a one-year suspension by presiding judge Nicola Saffman, who also ordered him to perform 250 hours of unpaid labour.
