The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a combination of rainy and sunny weather conditions across the country from Monday to Wednesday.
In its weather outlook released on Sunday, the agency said the northern region will experience sunny skies on Monday morning, with possible thunderstorms later in the day. Moderate rainfall is expected in parts of Taraba and Adamawa states.
NiMet added that isolated thunderstorms with moderate rain are likely in areas including Bauchi, Gombe, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba during the afternoon and evening hours.
“For the North Central Region, a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is anticipated over the region during the morning hours with chances of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over Niger, Kogi, Kwara and the FCT.
“There are prospects of thunderstorms with moderate rains over parts of the Plateau, Kwara, Kogi, Benue, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory later in the day,” it said.
The agency also predicted cloudy conditions in the southern region in the morning, with chances of isolated thunderstorms and moderate rainfall across states such as Abia, Enugu, Edo, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom.
Later in the day, more areas in the south, including Oyo, Ebonyi, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun, Imo, Delta, Lagos, and others, are expected to experience thunderstorms and rainfall.
For Tuesday, NiMet forecast sunny conditions in the north during the morning, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rain in parts of Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba later in the day.
The north-central region is expected to have a cloudy atmosphere with sunshine intervals in the morning.
“There are prospects of thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Benue, the Federal Capital Territory, Kogi, Nasarawa and Plateau States during the afternoon/evening hours.
“For the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere is anticipated over the region during the morning hours with chances of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by light rains over parts of Enugu, Imo, Rivers, Delta, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.
“There are prospects of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rains over parts of Bayelsa, Rivers, Delta, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States during the afternoon or evening hours,” it said.
On Wednesday, the agency said the north will again experience sunny skies in the morning, with chances of thunderstorms in parts of Borno, Gombe, Taraba, and Adamawa.
It added that moderate rainfall may occur later in Kaduna, Gombe, Bauchi, Taraba, and Adamawa states.
NiMet also forecast cloudy conditions with sunshine intervals in the north-central region, alongside possible thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in Plateau, Nasarawa, Kogi, Niger, Benue, and the Federal Capital Territory later in the day.
“For the southern region, a cloudy atmosphere with intervals of sunshine is anticipated over the region during the morning hours.
“Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected over the entire southern region,” it said.
The agency advised residents to take precautions, warning that strong winds may precede rainfall in areas likely to experience thunderstorms.
It also urged the public to secure loose objects, avoid driving during heavy rainfall, and disconnect electrical appliances during storms.
“Residents are advised to stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees.
“Airline operators are advised to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.
“Temperatures are expected to remain high, causing thermal discomfort. The public is advised to wear breathable clothing, stay in a well-ventilated environment and stay hydrated.
“Residents are advised to stay informed through weather updates from NiMet,” it said.
