The Nigerian Meteorological Agency () has predicted high-intensity rainfall that could lead to flash floods in coastal cities between May and June 2025.
The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, made this known while presenting the 2025 annual climate prediction in Abuja.
Keyamo also stated that the onset of rain would be delayed in northern and central states, including Plateau, Kaduna, Niger, Benue, Nasarawa, Taraba, Adamawa, and Kwara. However, early rains are expected in southern states such as Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Anambra, and parts of Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ondo, Lagos, Edo, Enugu, Imo, and Ebonyi.
Additionally, certain areas, including Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, and Jigawa, are expected to experience an earlier-than-usual end to the rainy season, while others, including Lagos, Taraba, and Cross River, will see a delayed end.
NIMET also forecasted above-average temperatures across the country, with warmer-than-normal conditions expected in January, February, March, and May.
Keyamo advised farmers and individuals reliant on rainfall to consult NIMET’s Seasonal Climate Change document for guidance.
