The Lagos State branch of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for an increase in the minimum wage to N150,000, pointing to the rising cost of living and recent salary hikes in Imo and Ebonyi states.
The state NLC Chairperson, Funmi Sesi, made the demand on Thursday following the wage adjustments in those states.
Sesi noted that Lagos workers currently earn a minimum wage of N85,000 and emphasized that a review is necessary due to the significantly higher costs of housing, transportation, food, and other essential services in the state.
“The time has come for an upward review of minimum wage in Lagos. At least someone has taken the bull by the horns and opened the space,” she said.
She added that no one could blame Governor Sanwo-Olu now if he implements a higher wage for Lagos workers, stressing that they deserve a better wage and decent working conditions commensurate with the economic realities, especially in Lagos.
The State NLC boss expressed optimism that all state governments would emulate Imo and Ebonyi.
