The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has instructed its Rivers State Council to stage a peaceful rally on May 1, 2025, as part of activities marking this year’s Workers’ Day.
According to a letter dated April 22, 2025, and signed by Deputy General Secretary Comrade Ismail Bello, the rally will take place within the council premises, bringing together all affiliate unions. The focus will be on advocating for the restoration of democratic governance in Rivers State.
In view of what it described as the “peculiar circumstance of the subversion of democratic governance” in the state, the NLC leadership stressed that this year’s celebration should forgo fanfare in favor of sober reflection.
The rally will spotlight demands for democratic leadership, improved welfare for workers, and the people’s right to freedom and justice.
Across Nigeria’s 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory, Workers’ Day 2025 — themed “Reclaiming the Civic Space in the Midst of Economic Hardship” — will be observed, with the Rivers State event carrying a particularly pointed message about rebuilding civic leadership and safeguarding workers’ rights.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic values, the NLC called on all members to seize the May Day occasion to amplify the call for leadership that prioritizes the people in Rivers State.
