The leadership of Organized Labor, which includes the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), held an extraordinary National Executive Council gathering in Abuja on Tuesday.
The labor leaders’ meeting reportedly centered on Organized Labor’s upcoming strike in response to the recent assault on NLC National President, Joe Ajaero, last week.
At the NEC meeting, the leaders will also evaluate the Memorandum of Understanding inked between the Federal Government and Organized Labor on October 2, 2023. This agreement followed President Bola Tinubu’s decision to eliminate petrol subsidies in May, which subsequently led to soaring food prices and inflation.
After the meeting, the labor leaders are expected to provide the media with an update on their discussions and resolutions.
Organized Labor has expressed widespread outrage, alleging the involvement of Imo State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Barde, in the recent assault on Ajaero in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
Last Friday, Organized Labor issued a five-day ultimatum to the Federal Government, calling for the replacement of the police commissioner. They also pointed fingers at Governor Hope Uzodimma, who is seeking re-election, for the attack on Ajaero. However, the governor has denied any involvement in the assault on the labor leader.
In addition, Organized Labor demanded the apprehension and prosecution of some of the governor’s aides, and they threatened to initiate a nationwide industrial strike if their demands were not met.
On Sunday, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, redeployed Barde for the sake of maintaining neutrality in preparation for the November 11, 2023 governorship election in Imo State.
