The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria have declared an indefinite strike, which is to begin on October 3, 2023.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) president Joe Ajaero and Festus Osifo, president of TUC, made this known after a separate Emergency National Executive Council (INEC), meeting in Abuja on Tuesday.
During a joint statement delivered by both Presidents, they cited the alleged government insensitivity to the hardships faced by Nigerians following the removal of petrol subsidies as the reason for the indefinite strike.
The choice to initiate an indefinite strike stemmed from a perceived persistent lack of willingness and absence of proactive measures.
Additionally, both unions encouraged their respective state chapters to organize nationwide protests.
Prior to this, the NLC had conducted a two-day warning strike on September 5 and 6, 2023.
Meanwhile, Minister of Labour and Employment, Simon Lalong, has made an appeal to the NLC leadership to halt the impending strike. Lalong offered assurance that the Federal Government is committed to addressing the raised concerns.
