Nnamdi Kanu urges Justice Nyako to recuse herself from his case

Nnamdi Kanu has requested Justice Binta Nyako of the Federal High Court in Abuja to withdraw from his case, stating that he has lost confidence in the court.

During the resumed hearing, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra expressed dissatisfaction, accusing Justice Nyako of failing to comply with Supreme Court orders.

In open court, Kanu requested that she step down from his trial. In response, Justice Nyako agreed, stating she had no objection to recusing herself and would refer the case back to the chief judge for reassignment.

Kanu then instructed his counsel, Alloy Ejimakor, to sit down while he personally addressed Justice Nyako.

He referenced the Supreme Court’s ruling, which questioned the jurisdiction of the alleged broadcast for which he is being charged and pointed to a section of the judgment that suggested potential bias from the court.

Earlier, the Federal Government’s counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo, informed the court that they were prepared to proceed with the trial, but it could not continue under the current circumstances.

Kanu was re-arrested by the Federal Government in Kenya in 2021 and brought to Nigeria to face terrorism charges.

Although he pleaded not guilty, Justice Nyako denied him bail, citing his previous flight from the country while on bail, for which Senator Abaribe had stood surety.

Since then, Kanu has remained in the custody of the Department of State Services, as ordered by the Federal High Court in Abuja.
