The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has provided clarification regarding the reported fire at the Mobil filling station in Ikeja, Lagos, on Thursday.

In a statement issued by the Chief Corporate Communications Officer, Olufemi Soneye, NNPC Ltd emphasized that the explosion was unrelated to the recently commissioned NNPC Gas Marketing Ltd (NGML)/NIPCO Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations. These stations continue to operate safely and without any incidents.

The fire resulted in burns for two individuals and caused property damage estimated at millions of naira. Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion occurred around 11 a.m., destroying at least seven vehicles. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported.

The statement further clarified, “NNPC Ltd would like to stress that the NGML was not impacted by the explosion; it is not connected to the activities at the affected station. All NGML facilities in Lagos, including pipelines, metering stations, above-ground installations, and CNG facilities, remain in safe operating condition.”
