No favouritism in fighting corruption under Tinubu – VP Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has affirmed that President Bola Tinubu’s government is committed to fighting corruption impartially and resolutely.

He shared these remarks on Thursday during the Second Edition of The Chronicle Roundtable in Abuja, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb unemployment in Nigeria.

The event aimed to delve into how the economic and social strategies of Tinubu’s administration will reshape Nigeria.

Attendees included the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris; Special Adviser to the President on Political Matters in the Vice President’s Office, Hakeem Baba-Ahmed; and the former Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Shamsudeen Usman, among others.

Currently, several members from the President’s party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), are facing prosecution by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on various corruption charges.

Notably, former Kogi State governor Yahaya Bello is being prosecuted by the EFCC on 19 counts involving allegations of money laundering, breach of trust, and misappropriation of N80.2 billion. Bello served as governor from January 27, 2016, to January 27, 2024, and was succeeded by Usman Ododo, also from APC.

On April 17, 2024, EFCC operatives attempted to arrest Bello at his Abuja residence, but were interrupted when Ododo reportedly intervened and removed Bello from the premises.

Following this incident, the EFCC issued a wanted notice for Bello and affirmed that interference with its operations would not be tolerated, a stance supported by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, who advised Bello to surrender himself.

The case is presently being heard by Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court in Abuja.
