Prominent All Progressives Congress member Joe Igbokwe has voiced criticism against activist Aisha Yesufu, citing what he views as disrespectful conduct towards the new national anthem.
Yesufu, recognized for her activism, declined to sing the national anthem “Nigeria we hail thee” at an event, choosing instead to remain seated while others stood to honor the anthem.
In a video shared on X on Friday, the co-convener of the BringBackOurGirls advocacy group was observed sitting while the new national anthem was being recited.
Captioning the video, she wrote: “#NotMyNationalAnthem.”
Reacting, on his Facebook page on Saturday Igbokwe criticized Yesufu’s behavior as “nonsensical” and warned that her actions may harm her and her family.
He wrote, “Aisha Yesufu cannot respect the National Anthem. Let us see where all the nonsensical behaviour will take her to. She may not understand the damage she is doing to herself and her family. Continue.”
President Tinubu signed the National Anthem Bill 2024 into law on Wednesday, restoring ‘Nigeria we hail thee’ as the national anthem.
