NPFL champions Enugu Rangers knocked out of CAF Champions League

The Nigerian league champions, Rangers International Football Club of Enugu, have been eliminated from the CAF Champions League after suffering a 3-1 defeat to Angola’s Sagrada Esperança on Sunday.

Rangers exited the tournament with a 3-2 aggregate score, having won the first leg of the second-round qualifier 1-0 last weekend in Uyo.

This result leaves Nigeria without any representatives in the lucrative group stage of the competition, following the earlier exit of Remo Stars.

In the match held in Luanda, Rangers fell behind 2-0 in the first half, but Anayo Ogbonna scored just before halftime, leveling the aggregate score at 2-2, which would have allowed Rangers to advance on away goals.

However, Jaime Pimpao’s goal for the Angolans in the 67th minute sealed Rangers’ fate, sending Sagrada into the group stage.
