The Edo State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arrested a 24-year-old suspect over an alleged online fraud involving the fake sale of a vehicle worth more than N3 million.

The State Commandant, Saidi Akintayo, disclosed this during a press briefing in Benin on Monday, saying the incident was reported on February 3 by a victim, Olanrewaju Nurudeen, who attempted to buy a 2010 Toyota Corolla through a US-based online car auction platform.

According to him, the victim unknowingly transferred N3,005,000 into a bank account linked to fraudsters after the platform was compromised.

“After receiving the complaint, I directed the command’s investigative team to immediately track down those involved in the fraudulent act.

“The investigators obtained a court order to access the account details linked to the transaction.

“This led to the arrest of one Momoh Rabiu, from Auchi in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.

“The suspect confessed that his bank account was used by his friend, popularly known as ‘Destiny Money,’ who is currently at large, to receive the fraudulent funds.”

Akintayo added that the suspect admitted receiving a portion of the stolen funds, amounting to N277,000.

He said investigations were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing accomplice, while the case would be charged to court upon completion.

“At the conclusion of investigation, the suspect will be charged to court,” he said.

The NSCDC command reiterated its commitment to tackling cybercrime and other forms of online fraud in Edo State.
