The Kano State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has apprehended six suspects for allegedly vandalising and stealing railway sleepers in Kiru Local Government Area.
The State Commandant, Mohammed Agalama, made this known on Wednesday while speaking at a press briefing at the command headquarters.
“The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, wishes to inform the general public of the arrest of six suspected vandals involved in the illegal removal and theft of railway slippers in Kiru Local Government Area of Kano State,” he said.
He explained that the suspects were arrested by vigilant operatives following credible intelligence and sustained surveillance.
“The individuals were caught in the act of tampering with railway infrastructure, an act which constitutes economic sabotage and poses serious threats to public safety and national development,” he said.
Agalama identified the suspects as Sulaiman Salisu, 45; Musa Aliyu Harisu, 22; Ishaq Alhassan, 20; Isa Aminu, 35; Sadiq Bala, 20; and Mansur Idris, 22, all from Kaduna State.
Items recovered from them include vandalised railway sleepers, 60 railway sleeper nuts, and tools used in carrying out the act, such as a 50kg gas cylinder, a 5kg gas cylinder, and a 20-metre hose.
Preliminary findings, he said, showed that the suspects had been involved in similar activities, intending to sell the materials for personal profit.
The commandant reaffirmed the corps’ commitment to protecting critical national infrastructure and warned that acts of vandalism would be met with strict legal consequences.
He added that the suspects would be prosecuted once investigations are concluded.
“The NSCDC Kano State Command remains committed to safeguarding all critical infrastructure and ensuring the security of lives and property in the state,” he added.
