NSCDC arrests ten illegal miners in Zamfara
Two Nigerian Security and Defence Corps (NSCDC) personnel got injured during an operation in Zamfara state that resulted in the arrest of 10 unlicensed miners.
Illegal miners were detained at two distinct mining sites in the Talata Marafa Local Government Area’s Mutusgi and Tungabai settlements.
Following the operation, NSCDC spokesperson Ikor Oche addressed journalists, saying that despite a Federal Government ban, some groups are still carrying out illegal mining activities in the region.
He added that the operators also seized eight motorcycles, ten bags of precious stones, and a number of tools, including a dane gun that belonged to a guard protecting the illegal miners.
During the mission, two corps operatives were attacked, leaving them with varying degrees of injuries, according to the spokeswoman.
Illegal mining activities have been related to instability in Zamfara, prompting the Federal Government to put a stop to them two years ago.
However, many people continue to mine illegally, particularly in rural areas.
The NSCDC spokesperson warned individuals involved in the illegal actions that they would not be spared if they were proven guilty.
