The Osun State Command of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has taken into custody a teenage girl with hearing and speech impairments who was found wandering the streets of Osogbo, the state capital.

According to the agency, the girl’s identity is still unknown because she is unable to communicate. The command has appealed to residents to provide any information that could help reunite her with her family.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, Kehinde Adeleke, on Saturday in Osogbo, the NSCDC said, “The minor, estimated to be between the ages of 15 and 16, was found by concerned members of the public along Odi-Olowo, in Osogbo, Osun State.

“She was subsequently brought to the NSCDC office for safety. Preliminary observations indicate that the girl is unable to speak and hear and she has not been able to provide any useful information regarding her identity, family or place of residence.

“The Command under the leadership of Commandant Igbalawole Sotiyo, is therefore appealing to members of the public who may have any information that could assist in identifying the girl or locating her family to kindly come forward.”

The corps also urged any parents, guardians, or relatives searching for a missing child matching the description to get in touch with the command.

The statement added, “Parents, guardians, or relatives who may be searching for a missing child matching this description are also urged to contact the Command, along Iwo-Ibadan Road, Onibueja, Ido-Osun, Osun State.”

This incident comes months after it was reported in May 2025 that the Osun NSCDC shut down a privately owned home for children with disabilities in Osogbo due to inadequate facilities.

A statement by Kehinde Adeleke explained that the State Commandant, Igbalawole Sotiyo, ordered the closure because the home lacked proper infrastructure for caring for children with disabilities.

During the operation, Deputy Commandant Oluwafemi Abeere said officials acted on a public tip-off.

“Upon arrival, it was evident that the children were malnourished, and operatives discovered that the home lacked registration with relevant authorities, raising concerns about the children’s well-being.”
