NSCDC to dismiss officer over alleged link with bandits in Zamfara

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps has pledged to take disciplinary action, including dismissal and prosecution, against its officer, Maikano Sarkin-Tasha, who was arrested by the police for allegedly supplying ammunition and drugs to bandits in Zamfara State.

Zamfara State Commandant, Sani Mustapha, condemned the officer’s alleged criminal actions during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Gusau, describing the behavior as barbaric and unacceptable.

“We condemned this act in all ramifications as our command is known for integrity in service delivery, discipline and compliance with ethical standards,” the Commandant said.

“The command has zero tolerance to indiscipline, corruption, criminality or any vices that are unbecoming of an officer of the Corps.

“The Corps Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is also enforced regularly to regulate personnel against compromise or any act of misconduct which is contrary to set standards and inimical to the wellbeing of the society.

“The Command wishes to be placed on record, that the officer’s action reflects only his personality as an individual, it does not in any way represent or reflect the image, character or standard of officers and men of the Zamfara Command or the Corps nationwide.”

He explained that the arrested officer had previously been reported for displaying an irresponsible attitude toward his work, and attempts to track him down had been unsuccessful.

Preliminary findings indicate that the officer was apprehended at a checkpoint between the Damba and Sabon Gida areas while en route to his hometown, Mada. Authorities allegedly discovered substances believed to be cannabis and other hard drugs in his possession. Additionally, three G3 rifle armors and one anti-aircraft gun armor, totaling four rounds of ammunition, were recovered from his residence.

The Commandant stated that he would collaborate with the Zamfara State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Dalijan, to ensure thorough disciplinary measures, investigations, and prosecution are carried out, holding the officer accountable under the full extent of the law.

He reiterated that the NSCDC is committed to collaborating with all government security agencies in the fight against crime and will not hesitate to enforce discipline against any of its errant officers, regardless of their connections.

“While the incident is regrettable, the command will continue to strive in positioning the corps in the light of good character, conduct and discipline.

“Our Command will continue to work for the good people of the state to protect critical national assets and protect lives and property of the citizens with utmost professionalism and without compromise.

“We promise to pursue the case with utmost transparency as the Corps does not condone any act indiscipline, not to talk of banditry or terrorism allegations,” he said.

He assured that the Command will keep the press and the general public informed of any further developments in a timely manner.
