The National Universities Commission has announced the reconstitution of its Committee on Degree Mills to intensify efforts against the rise of illegal universities within the Nigerian University System.

In a post shared on the commission’s X handle on Friday, Executive Secretary Abdullahi Ribadu, who inaugurated the committee, emphasized the importance of protecting the credibility of university education in the country.

Ribadu explained that the committee was formed to strengthen the commission’s commitment to addressing practices that compromise the quality and integrity of university degrees in Nigeria.

“The committee was constituted to reinforce the Commission’s commitment to curbing activities that undermine the quality and credibility of university degrees in Nigeria,” Ribadu stated.

He added that tackling the operations of degree mills is essential for maintaining standards and safeguarding the nation’s higher education system.

The committee is chaired by NUC Director of Inspection and Monitoring, Justina Emerole, with members drawn from key directorates within the commission.

Its responsibilities include identifying and investigating suspected degree mills, gathering evidence for prosecution, and verifying claims of affiliation with local or foreign universities. The panel will also work with security and anti-corruption agencies such as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Department of State Services, Nigeria Police Force, Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to close illegal institutions and prosecute offenders.

Additionally, the committee will lead public awareness campaigns and provide policy recommendations to strengthen regulatory measures against illegal universities nationwide.
