The Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission (NUC), Abubakar Rasheed has stepped down from his role.

Deputy Executive Secretary (DES) of the Commission, Chris Maiayaki confirmed the development on Monday.

He said Rasheed will officially hand over everything concerning the commission on June 30.

Maiayaki added that the NUC boss stepped down due to “personal reasons” and his desire to resume teaching at Bayero University Kano (BUK).

“Yes, it’s not resignation but stepping down with effect from June 30. (It is) for personal reasons and his desire to return back to BU Kano to teach research and undertake community action consistent with the tripod function of the academia,” he said.

“Please correct that it is not resignation but stepping down,” he told TheCable in an interview.

Rasheed was appointed as the executive secretary of the NUC by former President Muhammadu Buhari in August 2016.

He was reappointed by Buhari in 2021.

The outgoing executive secretary was born in October 1957 at Makarfi in Kaduna state.

He began his teaching career in July 1981 as a graduate assistant in the department of English and European Languages of Bayero University.

Rasheed rose through the ranks to become a senior lecturer and head of department at the institution.

He has served in several committees and boards as chairman as well as member including senate committee of deans and directors.
