NURTW leader arrested over murder of dispatch rider in Lagos

The Lagos State Police Command has taken Samsideen Oladiti, a leader of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), into custody over his suspected involvement in the killing of a dispatch rider in Lagos.

The incident reportedly took place on Tapa Street, Lagos Island, where the dispatch rider was allegedly assaulted and fatally wounded.

According to eyewitnesses, the 55-year old NURTW leader and his accomplices were involved in the altercation that led to the dispatch rider’s death.

The police have confirmed the arrest and are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, while the NURTW leader is being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department.

Deputy Spokesman for the Lagos State Police Command, DSP Babaseyi Oluseyi, in a statement on Friday, said Oladiti, popularly known as “Shamelon”, was arrested in connection with two violent crimes on Lagos Island involving a case of murder and another of assault occasioning harm.

“On September 17, 2025, at about 3pm, the suspect allegedly attacked a dispatch rider on Lagos Island, using a helmet and fists to inflict serious bodily injury.

“The victim was rushed to hospital, placed on oxygen, and is currently receiving medical treatment.

“On September 18, 2025, at about 11am, another complaint was lodged against the same suspect in connection with an incident that occurred on August 28, 2025. During the altercation, the suspect allegedly used a metallic ring to repeatedly strike a man on the head and face, inflicting severe injuries. Despite medical intervention, the victim was confirmed dead by a doctor on September 17, 2025. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

“Following news of the death, sympathizers of the deceased mobilized and staged a violent protest at the suspect’s office in Sandgrouse Market, Lagos Island, setting two motorcycles belonging to the suspect ablaze and causing unrest in the area.

“The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, personally led police personnel comprising mobile policemen, conventional police officers, and tactical squads to the scene. He swiftly restored calm, prevented further breakdown of law and order, and assured residents that the suspect is in custody and will be promptly prosecuted after investigations are concluded” he added.
