The National Youth Service Corps has designated three local government areas in Kebbi State as off-limits for corps members due to escalating security concerns.

The agency is also seeking the relocation of its orientation camp from Dakingari to a more secure environment within the state.

Speaking during an interaction with journalists at the temporary orientation camp in Basura, Jega LGA, Kebbi NYSC Coordinator Bala Kagarko said the security situation has continued to affect the deployment of corps members to the state.

“For the safety of corps members, we are no longer posting them to Augie, Arewa and Sakaba local government areas of the state,” he said.

Kagarko explained that the decline in corps members has left critical sectors facing manpower shortages.

“We no longer have enough doctors to post to state hospitals, and there are not enough corps members to deploy to schools and other areas where they are needed to contribute to development.

“Kebbi now has the least number of corps members in the country. Several appeals have been made to the appropriate authorities, but we are yet to receive a response.”

The move follows a fresh wave of attacks in parts of Kebbi State.

One of the affected areas, Arewa LGA, recently witnessed a deadly assault when suspected Lakurawa insurgents reportedly attacked Fasken Rafi village, leaving at least 20 people dead.

Following the incident, the state government expressed sympathy with the bereaved families and reaffirmed its determination to confront insecurity.

Deputy Governor Umar Tafida, who led officials to the community, assured residents that efforts were ongoing to strengthen security and protect lives and property across the state.
