Lagos has entered a period of mourning following the death of the Akran of Badagry, De Wheno Aholu Menu-Toyi, who passed away at the age of 89 after a brief illness.

His death ends an illustrious 48-year reign, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in the history of Lagos State.

The palace confirmed that medical experts pronounced the monarch dead, while traditional burial rites have since begun in line with custom.

Residents of Badagry described the loss as devastating, saying the community has lost not only a king but a father figure whose wisdom, guidance and calming presence offered reassurance during difficult times.

As at the time of filing this report, the Lagos State Government had yet to release an official statement on the passing of the monarch.
