The presidential candidate of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has named former Kano State governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso as his vice-presidential candidate for the 2027 general election.
The announcement was made on Saturday after Obi emerged as the party’s presidential flagbearer during its primary election.
The development follows the recent move by Obi and Kwankwaso from the African Democratic Congress to the NDC. Both politicians had cited lingering internal crises and legal battles within their former party as reasons for their defection.
Political observers say the partnership could alter the dynamics of the 2027 race by bringing together two opposition figures with considerable influence in different regions of the country.
Obi is widely regarded as having a strong following among young Nigerians and voters in the South-East and parts of the South-South, while Kwankwaso retains significant political strength in Kano State and other parts of Northern Nigeria through his established political network.
The NDC leadership said it believes the Obi-Kwankwaso ticket will boost the party’s chances and strengthen its position ahead of the next presidential election.
