Ogun 2023: Again, Amosun rejects Gov Abiodun, snubs Adebutu and Akinlade, reveals preferred candidate

Senator Ibikunle Amosun, a former governor of Ogun State, has endorsed Biyi Otegbeye of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for governor in the 2023 elections in place of the current governor, Dapo Abiodun.

Abiodun, who succeeded Amosun in 2019 is running for reelection in 2023 on the APC platform.

Amosun announced that he will support Otegbeye over Abiodun in the upcoming election in the state, breaking his silence on the subject. He also vowed his support for Bola Tinubu, the APC Presidential candidate.

He made his position known in an exclusive interview with BBC Yoruba on Monday which was monitored.

Amosun said, “For the presidential poll, I can assure you, both right, left and centre, we are supporting one person (Tinubu). I believe we are supporting one person. On the governorship poll, that’s a different ball game. I don’t belong there.

“For the governorship, that is different I don’t hide behind one finger to fight. That’s why people say to me ‘don’t say that.’ On governorship, my supporters and I, we don’t belong to that side. I do not support APC on that side, Biyi Otegbeye is the person I am supporting and ADC is the party.”

Prior to the 2019 elections, Abiodun and Amosun were at odds over the governorship ticket that went to Abiodun.

Adekunle Akinlade, a candidate running on the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) platform, had received Amosun’s endorsement.

However, Akinlade, who was defeated by Abiodun by 19,000 votes, switched to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and was appointed the party’s vice-candidate for governor.

Otegbeye, the most recent candidate for Amosun, is Managing Director of Regency Alliance Insurance PLC and hails from the Ogun West Senatorial district.
