The Ogun State Government has ordered the closure of Obada Grammar School, Obada, Idi-Emi, following the tragic death of Monday Arijo, an SS2 student who reportedly lost his life due to corporal punishment.

This action accompanies the arrest and suspension of the teacher implicated in the incident last Friday.

Additionally, the school principal, Tamrat Onaolapo, has been suspended after previously receiving a formal warning for allowing corporal punishment contrary to state regulations.

The closure was mandated by Governor Dapo Abiodun, who has also called for the establishment of a panel to investigate the circumstances leading to this unfortunate event.

The governor assured that anyone found responsible based on the investigation will face legal consequences.

State government representatives have since visited the family of the deceased student to extend their condolences and gather firsthand accounts for a comprehensive investigation.

The visiting delegation included senior officials such as the Director of Secondary and Higher Education, Principals General of Egba and Yewa Divisions, the Zonal Education Officer for Imeko Afon, as well as representatives from ANCOPPS, the Trade Union Congress of Ogun State, and ASSUS.

During the visit, the officials expressed their sincere condolences and pledged the state government’s full support to the grieving family.

They further assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted, emphasizing the commitment to accountability.

A condolence letter and a cash gift of N500,000 were presented to the family as a gesture of support.
