The Ondo State Government has approved the death penalty for individuals convicted of kidnapping.

This announcement was made by the state’s Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Kayode Ajulo, who spoke on behalf of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa following the State Executive Council’s monthly meeting on Saturday.

Ajulo stated that the decision is part of broader efforts to enhance security and protect residents, as the state has recently faced a surge in kidnapping cases—many of which have ended in fatalities or forced families to pay large ransoms.

He further noted that both kidnapping and cultism pose serious threats to public safety and order, stressing that strengthening the legal framework is essential to deterring such crimes and improving overall security in the state.

The state’s chief legal officer further stressed that proposals would soon be transmitted to the House of Assembly for necessary legislative action, including sentencing convicted kidnappers to death.
