Approximately 50 youths stormed the state headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Akure, Ondo State, on Wednesday, protesting and demanding the removal of Resident Electoral Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola.
The REC was accused of having associations with certain political parties in the lead-up to the November 16 gubernatorial election in the state.
Carrying placards with various messages, the youths condemned the allegations against the REC as detrimental and unprofessional, arguing that they could compromise the electoral process.
Speaking on behalf of the group, Olawale Ijanusi accused the REC of colluding with political parties in the state and urged the REC to refrain from such actions if they are true.
The Administrative Secretary of INEC in the state, Biodun Amosu, addressed the youths and commended them for conducting the protest peacefully.
He assured them that the INEC Chairman would address the issue, emphasizing that the election would be credible.
“We can assure you that once you have your agents in your polling booth, you man your votes, you protect your votes, nothing can happen,” he stated.
“With the calibre of officers here, we can assure you, will always work to ensure that our votes count. Please, be with us, work with us, let us work together.”
