One dead, four injured in Anambra vehicle collision

Late on Sunday, an accident on the Onitsha-Nteje-Awka motorway in Anambra State claimed the lives of one person and injured four others in varied degrees.

A private Honda CRV with the licence plate LFA 224 TN collided with a commercial Howo truck (10 tyres) with the registration number JUX 95 XA.

Eyewitnesses at the scene of the accident claim that the truck collided with the CRV as it was going to enter the Ukpo junction and was coming out of the junction quickly.

According to reports, the truck driver lost control, fell on the CRV, and crashed.

Five people were reportedly involved in the collision, according to a statement made on Monday by Margaret Onabe, the acting sector public education officer for the Federal Road Safety Corps in the state of Anambra.

Onabe said, “Four male adults sustained varying degrees of injury and one male adult was killed, the driver of the CRV. The probable cause of the fatal road crash was speed, loss of control by the truck driver.

“The crash victims were rushed to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka.

“As at the time of filing this report, the dead victim (driver of the CRV) is still trapped under the truck. Efforts are being made by the FRSC personnel at RS5.33 Nteje Unit Command to remove the trapped body.

“Personnel are on the ground managing traffic and ensuring obstruction is cleared.”

She added that the Sector Commander, Anambra State, Corps Commander Adeoye Irelewuyi, commiserated with the family of the dead victim, and sent his prayers to the injured persons.

“The sector commander warned motorists to desist from excessive speeding and ensure their vehicles are road worthy before plying the road. Drive to save lives on our roads,” she added.
