A two-story structure fell in the Onipanu neighborhood of Lagos, leaving one person injured and hospitalized.
The allegedly affected structure is located on Oke Arin Street, just off Shyllon Ilupeju.
The incident was corroborated by a local source who requests anonymity, who also noted that the building is close to the rail line.
“Yes, a building collapsed at the Oju Irin (rail line) area during the early hours of today,” he said.
The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency confirmed the occurrence and stated that the building was an abandoned two-story structure that fell to the ground.
The inquiry, according to LASEMA, showed that the catastrophe happened at around 12:45 in the morning because of the structure’s age.
“Fortunately, no loss of life. However, one adult male sustained minor injury and has been taken to hospital.
“The affected building has been cordoned off in order to prevent any threat,” the agency said in a statement on Wednesday.
As the government seeks to reverse the trend, Wednesday’s occurrence is the most recent in a string of building collapses that have been reported in Lagos.
At least 40 people were killed when a high-rise building of luxurious apartments that was under construction collapsed in November of last year in the state’s Ikoyi neighborhood.
Three months later, in February, a second building that was still under construction in the state’s Yaba district fell, trapping some workers inside.
During a particularly strong downpour in May, a three-story structure at 4, Alayaki Lane, Lagos Island, collapsed, killing at least two people.
While LASEMA claimed that the building was already in breach of state safety regulations, it also claimed that the LASBCA District Office had seized the facility, served it with the necessary legal warnings, and sealed it at both the district and central enforcement levels.
Despite this, it claimed that the building’s developer had conducted covert operations, mainly on the weekends and at night.
