Allegedly, one person was killed and several others injured during a violent incident at Bukuru market in the Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State on Monday. Hoodlums clashed with Jos Metropolitan Development Board Officials who were enforcing an Executive Order, resulting in the burning of over 10 vehicles and a microfinance bank building.
The confrontation unfolded when enforcement officers arrived at the market to oversee the demolition of illegal structures, particularly those erected along the roadside and within the market vicinity. However, they encountered resistance from hoodlums who emerged from nearby neighborhoods and engaged the officers, hurling stones and other dangerous objects.
The ensuing chaos led to the burning of a microfinance bank building and the destruction of over 10 cars, while some traders attempting to flee sustained injuries.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang condemned the attack on the task force members and traders, denouncing it as shameful. He expressed dismay at the reckless behavior of the attackers, who wielded weapons, caused harm, looted shops, and vandalized vehicles belonging to innocent traders.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Gyang Bere, Mutfwang criticized the motives of those who violated Executive Order 003 and resorted to violence against law-abiding citizens. He called on security agencies to promptly apprehend all perpetrators and ensure swift justice.
The governor reiterated the state government’s commitment to dealing decisively with troublemakers. He clarified that the overarching purpose of Executive Order 003 is to prevent Jos from deteriorating into a slum and becoming a haven for criminal activities.
Security personnel have been deployed to the affected area to restore order and maintain peace.
