A protest on Tuesday in Zaranda Gari village, located in the Toro Local Government Area of Bauchi State, resulted in one fatality and multiple injuries.

The unrest, which began around 9:00 a.m., was sparked by residents protesting the arrest of a local charcoal dealer. The situation escalated when members of the Nigerian Hunters Forestry and Security Service, a quasi-security group, fired sporadically.

According to state police spokesman Ahmed Wakili, three residents from Zaranda Gari were injured: Abubakar Yahaya (35), Hussaini Yunusa (20), and Yayangida Hussaini (16). They were rushed to the Primary Healthcare Center in Zaranda Gari, where Yahaya later died from his injuries.

In response, Bauchi State Commissioner of Police, Auwal Muhammad, has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Yahaya’s death and the actions of the security personnel involved.

“The Command has taken control of the situation and is committed to a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable,” the police said in a statement.

Tactical teams have been deployed to the area to restore order and reopen the blocked highway.
