Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State has secured the release of 30 inmates in old and new correctional centres in Minna, the Niger state capital.
The Governor, represented by the Secretary to State Government, Alhaji Abubakar Usman announced the payment of fines for the inmates during the visit to both centres as part of the commemoration of his one year in office.
Bago also presented malaria drugs and food items including bags of rice, beans, and maize among others to the officials of the centre to cushion the effects of economic Hardship.
He said the essence of the visits and donations were to allow the inmates to feel a sense of belonging, just as he he called on the freed inmates to return to society and be good ambassadors of the state and the country at large
“Thirty ( 30) people have been pencilled down for clemency. We consider those whose cases were minor and their fines would be paid. We had recently also approved payment of fine for 100 inmates and that had been done. We also brought food, drugs and other items, ” he said.
Governor Bago noted that the freed inmates would also be empowered with skills in agriculture and other entrepreneurship activities in order to make them productive members of society.
