The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Niger State branch, have suspended the two-day walkout by workers in the state.

The organised labour, in a joint statement signed by the state’s NLC and TUC chairman, Comrade Idris A. Lafene and Comrade Ibrahim Gana, respectively, urged all civil officials in the state and local government to return to work immediately.

According to the statement, the decision to stop the strike was made after reaching an agreement with the government on the strike demands.

“After a thorough debate on all of the issues at stake, the SEC unanimously determined that the gains of the struggle are sufficient to suspend the ongoing action and allow for further discussion.

“Accordingly all workers in the state and the local government are directed to resume work immediately” , the message went on to say.
However, organised labour praised civil servants in the state and municipal governments for believing in the cause and responding to the rallying cry.

It should be noted that organised labour declared an indefinite strike action in response to the government’s inability to meet the union’s demands on a number of issues, including wage award to civil servants in state and local government areas, consequential adjustment for TSSU, payment of annual leave allowance, and refund of the 10% Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS), among others.
