Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on US President Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
Davido, whose uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking another term in office, made the appeal in a statement shared on his official X account on Wednesday, while an election town hall organised by Arise Television was taking place.
The singer said concerns about potential violence, intimidation and interference with the electoral process had made international scrutiny of the election important.
“A CALL FOR ATTENTION TO PRESIDENT DONALD TRUMP,” Davido wrote.
He appealed to Trump and the global community to pay close attention to the poll while encouraging Nigerian authorities to safeguard voters and ensure their ballots are properly counted.
“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” he said.
Davido also raised concerns about the possibility of violence during the election and called for steps to prevent bloodshed and intimidation.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.
The singer further urged government agencies and other relevant authorities to maintain peace and transparency throughout the electoral process.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected,” Davido said.
His comments came ahead of Saturday’s governorship election, in which the incumbent, Governor Ademola Adeleke, is seeking re-election against candidates representing several political parties.
The Osun election has led to increased political activities across the state, with candidates and their supporters intensifying their campaigns ahead of the vote.
Davido ended his message by tagging Trump and again stressing the need for a peaceful election.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.
